Sustainable Agriculture

Sustainable agriculture encompasses systems and practices that aim to produce sufficient and high-quality foodstuff at affordable prices while protecting the environment and natural resources to meet the needs of the rapidly growing global population.

Since the dawn of civilizations, agricultural production has been the fundamental source of life. Today, it faces significant challenges. The rapidly growing world population requires more food every day. However, the opportunities for expanding arable land are minimal and often come at the expense of natural areas and wildlife habitats. Thus, the only way to increase agricultural production is by obtaining more yield from each unit area, meaning increasing productivity. However, efforts and methods that are intended to achieve this have brought about some negative consequences. Frequent processing reduces soil fertility, and the chemicals used for fertilization and plant protection can adversely affect the crops and the environment.

In the 21st century, the greatest success in agriculture will be achieving the desired increase in production while minimizing adverse environmental conditions. This can only be achieved by implementing sustainable methods and lasting solutions in agriculture. Sustainable agriculture embraces systems and practices that ensure the production of sufficient and quality foodstuff at affordable costs, maintain the economic vitality of global agriculture, protect the environment and natural agricultural resources, and enhance the welfare of the world’s population. At NBT, raising awareness of this process and convincing all components of agriculture to commit to this shared future is our most valuable mission.
